By Myself Poem

Description:

Students will read Eloise Greenfield's poem "By Myself" and then create their own "I am" poems, building a list of words and phrases that describe who they are. Younger students can draw a picture instead of writing.

  • Generate a list of words and phrases that describe themselves.

  • Shape that list into an "I am" poem (or picture).

  • Share a line from their poem aloud and offer appreciations to peers.

Materials

  • Copy of "By Myself" by Eloise Greenfield (in her book Honey, I Love and Other Poems)

  • Chart paper or whiteboard for the brainstorm

  • Paper for each student

  • Pencils, crayons, markers

  • Optional: a posted copy of the original poem for students to reference while writing
