Beanbag Freeze

SEL Domain(s): Self-control

Grades: K-5

*Lesson may need to be modified to meet the specific needs of students

Description:

Students play a movement game where they balance a beanbag on their head while music plays. When the music stops, they freeze. When a beanbag falls, a friend has to help by carefully placing it back—then they move together as partners. The game builds listening, body control, and cooperative care all at once.

  • Practice listening for cues (music on, music off).

  • Build body awareness, balance, and coordination.

  • Practice helping a friend—without dropping your own beanbag.

Materials

  • One beanbag per child (a small balled-up sock works in a pinch)

  • A device and speakers to play music

  • A short playlist of upbeat, kid-friendly songs

  • Open floor space free of furniture or hard corners

  • Lesson plan
