Chalk Circles

SEL Domain(s): Self-control

Grades: 6-8

*Lesson may need to be modified to meet the specific needs of students

Description:

Students physically move to large pre-drawn chalk circles representing broad interest areas, discuss their specific goals within their group, then use chalk to draw branching smaller circles capturing increasingly specific personal goals — culminating in an individual circle for their most personal goal, which they share aloud before writing a concrete action plan for how to achieve it.

Materials

  • Sidewalk chalk (multiple colors)

  • Pavement, blacktop, or a large outdoor surface

  • Alternative if no pavement: butcher paper or chart paper taped together to make a large mural, with markers

  • Optional: student-chosen quotes about passion or goals, collected in advance

  • Notebooks or paper for the action plan and reflection

  • Lesson plan
